Choosing the right urn for international travel

A small urn is required to send a portion of ashes to Africa.
This page explains what to look for when selecting an urn for trans-continental travel.

Purchase your own urn

Because the urn will be transported internationally, not every urn is suitable.

Airlines and carriers apply specific handling and screening standards. These standards affect the size, material, sealing, and durability of the urn during transit.

To reduce delays and complications, we have identified urns available on Amazon that meet common airline and carrier requirements for international shipment.

You purchase the urn directly from the retailer and provide to your funeral home. The prices range from $20 to $35.

If you are unsure whether an urn is appropriate, we can confirm suitability before you proceed.

Alternative to urns

An urn is not the only option for transporting cremated remains.

For international transport, what matters most is that the container meets screening and handling requirements. This includes being non-metal, securely sealed, and suitable for x-ray inspection.

In some cases, families choose to use a simple container such as a reinforced cardboard or fibreboard box, provided it is strong, sealed, and appropriately packed inside an outer shipping container. These options are often used by funeral homes for transport purposes.

Containers made from solid metal, stone, ceramic, or other dense materials are generally not suitable, as they can interfere with security screening and delay transit.

If you are unsure whether a container is appropriate, we can advise before transport is arranged.
